About

GoodHope Insights is a research and media platform focused on China–Africa industrial cooperation, founded in 2018. We produce independent research and convene leaders around industrial trends, country opportunities, and risk dynamics across African markets.

Convening. In 2019 we organized a delegation of African tech founders — including Flutterwave, Lori Systems, Max.ng, and Cars45 — to Beijing for in-depth engagement with leading Chinese platforms such as Alibaba, JD, Meituan, Didi, and Baidu, and introductions to Chinese venture investors. Alongside it, we hosted the China–Africa Venture Forum, bringing together 200+ participants.

Research & media. We built a Chinese-language research and media publication with tens of thousands of targeted subscribers on WeChat, with further distribution across Zhihu, Xueqiu, Toutiao, Baijiahao, and Weibo. Our coverage spans energy and mining, infrastructure, industrial manufacturing, emerging sectors, ICT, country-specific opportunities, and risk early-warning.

Fieldwork. We have conducted on-the-ground research across Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, engaging directly with 100+ African innovation and startup companies and building a proprietary network of founders, operators, and ecosystem builders.

Flagship research. We published the Africa New Economy Bluebook (2019, 100,000+ words, 500+ copies distributed) and the Africa FinTech Industry Report (sold to institutional clients in China, including Transsion Holdings).

Investing. Since 2019 we have been an angel investor in two African ventures — Indicina (Lagos, Nigeria), a credit decisioning infrastructure platform serving banks and fintech companies; and Murphy Chicken (Kampala, Uganda), a growing restaurant chain.

Terrence Chang (Zhang Tailun) — Founder
Researcher on China–Africa Industrial & Digital Cooperation | Investor in African Ventures

Founder of GoodHope Insights, a Chinese-language research and media platform covering China-Africa industrial and digital cooperation. Founded in late 2018, the platform provides market intelligence, country research, and risk analysis on African markets to investors, operators, and policy researchers. He returned to GoodHope Insights full-time in 2026 after six years at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

At CAICT (2020-2026), he served as International ICT Researcher supporting China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Africa and BRICS digital cooperation. In that role, he provided policy research and analysis supporting two MIIT proposals subsequently announced by President Xi: the “China-Africa Digital Technology Cooperation Center” (2024 FOCAC Summit) and the “BRICS Digital Industry Ecosystem Cooperation Network” (2024 BRICS Summit, formally established April 2025). He was also the principal drafter of the Action Plan on China-Africa Digital Cooperation and Development, jointly released by China and 26 African countries at the 2024 China-Africa Digital Cooperation Forum. Through this work, he supported CAICT to sign an MOU with UNDP to co-develop the “Africa Digital Empowerment and Innovation Center” initiative, engaged with UNICEF on early-stage collaboration around AI for children’s health, education, and online protection, and built working relationships with 20 MOU-partner institutions across African think tanks, universities, and multilateral organizations.

Beyond research and policy work, he is directly engaged with the African startup ecosystem—as an angel investor in two locally-founded African ventures since 2019, and through ongoing field research across Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, and other markets.

Currently building GoodHope Insights into a sustained research and convening platform for China-Africa industrial cooperation.
